Repairing Cracked Gel Coat

It is a very thin liquid. You put literally one drop on the crack and spread it along the crack with a pin.

  1. Hairline cracks in gelcoat are not symbolic of structure problems. They are usually just cosmetic. If they should get deep and wide, it could mean a problem.but not usually. It is unfortunate as they are seen. There are repair/patch kits for gelcoat - just need to match the color.
  2. One of the missing instructions is to remove dirt, wax and grime from the crack by scraping a needle though the crack. This is important because without doing this, Hairline Fix cannot penetrate effectively to perform the intended repair. Hairline Fix is by no means a ‘rubber based product’, as claimed by a forum user in this thread.

I used a hairdryer to help it set quick and it was set in a few minutes. Each crack takes a few applications until the surface was level. I polished the areas I had repaired with some Farecla G3 on a rag by hand to finish and the results are very acceptable. I would say though that I repaired a horizontal surface and I think it might be much more difficult to repair a vertical surface. The white colour I used matched my fairly modern Jeanneau pretty well. May well be more noticeable on an older boat. Hope my experience is useful to anyone thinking of using the product.

Tried this last week. Watched the videos, read the instructions - absolutely wasted my time and money. Followed the method exactly. Room and panel is at 22degrees, clean out with a pin, soapy wash, clean rinse, dry, apply & level with the butt of the tube. The problem is that the drop does not flow into the crack rather it smears across the crack. Wiped off with acetone several times, dried and tried again.

Emailed the makers - no reply. Now sending the panel off for traditional repair. Last edited by GregW01; 25-09-16 at 12:53.

Real life game. Can I use Hairline Crack Fix on surfaces other than Gelcoat? Yes, it can be used on:.when using on plastic or aluminum surfaces. Do I need to grid out the repair or sand before I apply Hairline Crack Fix. The only prepping required is that you clean and dry the surface. No sanding is required, however if the cracks appear daker than.
